Nurturing the Next Generation of Graduate Students in Nuclear Engineering

On Friday, December 13 the Consortium for Monitoring, Technology, and Verification (MTV) hosted a hybrid event, welcoming 12 undergraduate students to their hybrid event to discuss national laboratory internship opportunities. During the event, Dr. Shaun Clarke kicked off the event with an overview of MTV and highlighted how MTV fellows engage in research at the national laboratories.

The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Mairead Montague, including current MTV students and alumni who completed internships and now hold positions at national laboratories. Panelists shared their experiences and insights into the internship process while addressing questions from the attendees.

Panelists:
●      Emily Gunger (University of Florida Ph.D. candidate/MTV Excellence and Diversity Fellow),
●      Juliann Lamproe (University of Michigan Ph.D. candidate/Los Alamos National Laboratory R&D Engineer),
●      Dr. Noah McFerran (MTV Alum/Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Research Scientist),
●      Dr. Sean Martinson (MTV Alum/Argonne National Laboratory Nuclear Nonproliferation Specialist),
●      Dr. Oskar Searfus (MTV Alum/Sandia National Laboratories Radiation Detection Physicist), and
●      Dr. Kelly Truax (MTV Alum/Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Physicist).

Following the panel, the undergraduate students engaged in a roundtable discussion with current U-M Ph.D. students, learning more about their experiences with MTV. Additionally, they were introduced to current internship opportunities at national laboratories.

We are excited about the potential collaborations and future involvement of these undergraduate students with MTV!
